15世紀(jì)初期進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)，直接源自中古法語(yǔ)的dependre，意為取決于條件和原因；最初源自古典拉丁語(yǔ)的dependere： de （來(lái)自，向下） + pendere （懸著），意為向下懸著。

depend多與on〔upon〕連用,只有當(dāng)主語(yǔ)是it/that時(shí),才可省略on〔upon〕,且只能接疑問(wèn)詞從句,其他情況都用作普通不及物動(dòng)詞。
It all depends或That depends表示“這很難說(shuō)”“得看情況”。
在口語(yǔ)中,作為開(kāi)場(chǎng)白或結(jié)束語(yǔ)的depend upon〔on〕 it意思是“無(wú)須懷疑”“我敢說(shuō)”,可以看成是省略了you may〔can〕...。
